Check out last week’s Top 5 Rankings

College football never disappoints, and this year is no exception. Let’s check in with the Weekly Rivalry Sports Top 5 for each power conference.

SEC TOP FIVE

The conference that has produced the most National Champions in the last 10 years is having a strange year. Georgia is still at the peak of their powers and appears to be a force in the race for the College Football Playoff, but they seem to be in their own tier in the SEC.

We are starting to see that Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU, and possibly Tennessee and Kentucky make up the next tier. Can any of these teams go on a run and make a push for the playoffs by the end of the year?

The SEC Top Five has been reshuffled as you can see below. this week will continue to separate the contenders from the pretenders as many of the teams fighting for the next spot under Georgia have a tough game coming up this week.

1. GEORGIA (6 – 0) AP Ranking – #1

Georgia came through and showed their skill and pride as the defending Champs this week. The demolished a previously undefeated Kentucky team by the score of 51 – 13!

This game showed that Georgia is not only for real, but that they can rise to the occasion when challenged. When focused and motivated, this is still a National Championship contending team.

They will be highly favored in their remaining games, but could be challenged by Ole Miss and Tennessee, and if they are not focused each week they could experience an unexpected loss.

Last Week SEC Ranking: 1

Week 7 Opponent: @ Vanderbilt at 12:00 pm EDT, Saturday 10/14/23

Rivalry Sports Prediction: Win

2. ALABAMA (5 – 1) AP Ranking – #11

Alabama was not able to dominate a good, but not great Texas A & M team over the weekend, but most importantly they did get the win by the score of 26 – 20.

The Crimson Tide have a tough last six games ahead with the exception of their game against Chattanooga. The rough patch starts this week with a game against the Arkasas Razorbacks who are not having the season they wanted, but would love to turn it around with a win against the Tide.

QB Jalen Milroe continues to provide the most upside for Alabama, but his struggles and tendency to make poor decisions keep them from reaching their full potentional. It is not all on Milroe though, as he needs some skill position players to consistently step up and help him out.

Last Week SEC Ranking: 2

Week 7 Opponent: Arkansas at 12:00pm EDT Saturday 10/14/23

Rivalry Sports Prediction: Win

3. OLE MISS (5 – 1) AP Ranking – #13

The Rebels are one of the most fun teams to watch in college football. They can light up the scoreboard and are learning to play defense throughout the season which makes them a dangerous team.

They did not dominate Arkasas this past weekend, but they still won 27 – 20. The Razorbacks are no easy win with QB KJ Jefferson leading the way and coming off an exciting win over LSU, Ole Miss did a good job getting the W.

Coach Lane Kiffin will continue to stay aggressive and the Rebels will probably be favored in all of their remaining games besides their game against Georgia. If Ole Miss can run the table and Alabama loses another game then Ole Miss will be in the SEC Championship!

Last Week SEC Ranking: 3

Week 7 Opponent: Bye Week

Rivalry Sports Prediction: Bye Week

4. LSU (4 – 2) AP Ranking – #22

LSU is proving that they are an offensive juggernaut, but they have to stop getting into shootouts every game. QB Jaden Daniels and his crew will continue to put up points, but the defense will determine just how good this team can be.

The Tigers came into the season expecting big things and are disappointed to already have two losses, but they have a chance to right their season and go into their showdown with Alabama on November 4th with only the previously mentioned two losses.

We will see what type of team LSU is over the next couple of weeks.

Week 7 Opponent: Auburn at 7:00pm EDT Saturday 10/14/23

Rivalry Sports Prediction: Win

5. Tennessee (4 – 1) AP Ranking – #19 tied

Tennessee took a tough loss to Florida earlier this year, but are still sitting at just that one loss. They are now entering the meat of their schedule where we will see if they are a contender or a pretender.

Coach Josh Heupel gives the Volunteers a chance to win each week and I think that QB Joe Milton will continue to improve and lead Tennessee to a permanent spot in the SEC Top 5 Rankings!

Last Week SEC Ranking: Unranked

Week 7 Opponent: Texas A&M at 3:30 pm EDT, Saturday 10/14/23

Rivalry Sports Prediction: Win

Dropped from SEC Top 5 Rankings:

Texas A & M (4 – 2)

Texas A & M missed an opportunity for a win against Alabama and fell out of the top 5 Rankings as a result. If they can win their game against Tennessee this weekend they could make their way back in.

Kentucky (5 – 1)

Kentucky ran into a buzzsaw in the Georgia Bulldogs this past weekend. The Bulldogs were motivated and beat Kentucky 51 – 13! Their loss coupled with a quality win by LSU and the fact that Tennessee also only has one loss knocked the Wildcats out of the SEC top 5.

Big Ten TOP FIVE

The Big Ten West looks to be a two team race with Wisconsin and Iowa fighting it out, but most of the interest is in the Big Ten East where three teams are ranked in the AP’s top 10!

We are getting to the meat of the schedule so each week we will have important games that could determine who makes the B1G Championship game!

Although there were no changes in the position of the B1G Top 5, each team learned more about themselves this past week and are ready to prove some more this coming week.

1. MICHIGAN (6 – 0) AP Ranking – #2

Michigan has done nothing but dominate this year. They have played one of the easier schedules, but have beat each of their six opponents by over 20 points!

The Wolverines look strong in every phase of the game and with a stellar coaching staff, they will continue to be a player in the chase for the College Football Playoffs.

Michigan plays a weak Indiana team this week, before a rivalry game against Michigan State on Oct 21st. If the Wolverines can stay focused and motivated, they should be undfeated for their stretch run where they play their three toughest games the last three weeks of the season.

Week 6 Opponent: Indiana at 12:00pm EDT Saturday 10/14/23

2. OHIO STATE (5 – 0) AP Ranking – #3

The Buckeyes were tested by Maryland this past weekend, but they pulled together and pulled away in the end for a 37 – 17 win against a quality opponent.

QB Kyle McCord continues to gain experience each week and with his plethora of options the Buckeyes offense should continue to improve. The only cause for concern is injuries to WR Emeka Egbuka and RB TreVeyon Henderson.

A strong Defense will continue to lead the way as the Buckeyes get ready for their showdown with Penn State in two weeks.

Last Week B1G Ranking: 2

Week 7 Opponent: @ Purdue at 12:00PM EDT Saturday 10/14/23

3. PENN STATE (5 – 0) AP Ranking – #6

Penn State is coming off of a Bye Week and gets a nice tune up game against Umass before they face Ohio State the following week.

The Nittany Lions have shown to be a talented and powerful team and should be fresh and ready for their showdown with the Buckeyes.

Will this be the season that Penn State catches Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten? They have a lot to prove before they will be ranked higher than those two powerhouses.

4. WISCONSIN (4 – 1) AP Ranking – Unranked

The Badgers took care of business against Rutgers when they secured a tough win by the score of 24 – 13.

The Big Ten West is always a chaotic division, but this week’s game against Iowa will firmly put the winner in the driver’s seat for a Big Ten Championship Game appearance.

Wisconsin will look to continue to pound the ball and play good defense against an Iowa team that seeks to do the same this week. The difference may be which team can supplement their ground game with a passing game and so far the Badgers look like they are that team.

Last Week B1G Ranking: 4

Week 7 Opponent: Iowa at 4:00PM EDT Saturday 10/14/23

Rivalry Sports Prediction: Win

5. MARYLAND (5 – 1) AP Ranking – Unranked

The Terps are disappointed by their loss to Ohio State, but the game was much closer than the final score of 37 – 17. Maryland now knows that it can play with the “Big Boys”, but in order to beat them they will have to play a clean game.

Star QB Taulia Tagovailoa tried to take on too much at times and ended up throwing two crucial interceptions.

Maryland will look to get back on track this week against an Illinois team that is experiencing a disappointing season and would like nothing more than to get rolling against Maryland.

The Terps need to right the ship with games against Michigan and Penn State still on the schedule.

PAC-12 TOP FIVE

The game of the week resides in the Pac – 12, where top 10 teams Oregon and Washington go head to head! That game will show who the leader for the Pac – 12 crown is, but don’t count out the loser, USC, Oregon State or Utah.

This conference is loaded with good football teams so enjoy watching them battle each other each week.

1. OREGON (5 – 0) AP Ranking – #8

The Ducks have been looking forward to this week where they get to play a Washington team that is ranked ahead of them in the AP rankings.

Both teams are very good, but the Ducks hope to show that they are the more rounded team with an offense led by QB Bo Nix and an underrated defense.

As Coach Dan Lanning said, “This team is fighiting for wins”!

2. WASHINGTON (5 – 0) AP Ranking – #7

The Huskies are coming off a Bye Week and looking forward to their game against Oregon this weekend.

The Winner of the Washington vs Oregon game not only gets a leg up in the Pac – 12, but the winner will also get a jump in the rankings nationally.

Washington has been extremely impressive this year, with their only game that was within 20 points their last game which was against Arizona. They will look to get back to their dominant ways against Oregon and have the game at home.

Last Week Pac-12 Ranking: 2

Week 7 Opponent: Oregon at 3:30pm EDT Saturday 10/14/23

3. USC (6 – 0) AP Ranking – #10

The trojans might be ranked number 3 in Rivarlry Sports PaC -12 Top 5, but they are a College Football Playoff contender.

They could improve their stock with a win against a quality and angry Notre Dame team this week, especially coupled with one of their competitors losing the Oregon vs Washington game.

Star QB Caleb Williams has continued to play at the top of the QB game, but USC faces a gauntlet of a schedule the rest of the way with five teams currently in the AP 25 in their last six games. If USC gets through this schedule unscathed then they have certainly earned it!

4. OREGON STATE (5 – 1) AP Ranking – #15

Oregon States win over the Utes in week 5 combined with their domination of every opponent besides Washington State has earned them the number 4 slot.

With Coach Jonathan Smith pushing the right buttons the Beavers are a threat to win each week.

We will see how they handle a showdown with nationally ranked UCLA this Saturday!

5. UTAH (4 – 1) AP Ranking – #16

The Utes had a Bye week last week at the perfect time. AFter a loss against Oregon State and the continued absence of Star QB Cam Rising, the Utes needed to regroup.

Hopefully another week to heal allows Cam Rising to take the field for the Utes game against California this week.

The Utes need him to get healthy and back to his old self in order to prepare for their brutal end of season schedule.

WASHINGTON STATE (4 – 1) AP Ranking – #19 tied

What a tough league the PAC – 12 is when one loss against a good team on the road drops you out of the Pac – 12 Top 5 rankings.

Washington State will be looking to get back on track this week against Arizona and they strive to get back in the Pac – 12 Top 5.

It may seem harsh to have a team in Oregon State ranked, when Washington State beat them, but Oregon State was on the road and the Beavers also have a great win against Utah.

BIG 12 TOP FIVE

The Big 12 is dominated by two teams this year: Oklahoma and Texas. They met this past week and the result didn’t disappoint! I am not too shy to say that Rivarly Sports picked the winner of this classic.

1. OKLAHOMA (6 – 0) AP Ranking – #5

The Red River Showdown was an instant classic. As predicted by Rivalry Sports, Oklahoma was able to win a hard fought game. With the 34 – 30 victory the Sooners have put themselves on the path to the Big 12 Championship game where they could face a rematch with Texas!

QB Dillon Gabriel proved he is a star QB and Coach Brent Venables showed his defensive chops by taking a team that was one of the worst defensive teams in the NCAA last year and turning them into a turnover making, hard charging Defense!

The Sooners get a well earned Bye Week this week before they continue their march towards a berth in the College Football Playoffs.

2. TEXAS (5 – 1) AP Ranking – #9

Texas faced a hungry Oklahoma team in the Red River Showdown and the Longhorns came up just short in the 34 – 30 game.

The Bye Week comes at a good time for Texas as they need to get over the loss and regroup to make a push to win their remaining games.

If the Longhorns win out, there is a good chance they will get a rematch with Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship!

3. KANSAS (5 – 1) AP Ranking – #23

The Jayhawks were forced to play without star QB Jalon Daniels again, but that didn’t stop them from dominating UCF this past weekend.

Kansas dominated on the ground where they racked up almost 400 yards rushing. The rushing game was led by RB Devin Neal’s 154 yards, but he had plenty of help from fellow RBs Daniel Hishaw Jr., and Dylan McDuffie.

Kansas will hope that their ground game continues to dominate and that QB Jalon Daniels is back by the time they face the Oklahoma Sooners on October 28th.

4. WEST VIRGINIA (4 – 1) AP Ranking – Unranked

Don’t look now, but Coach Neal Brown and the Mountaineers are knocking on the door of being ranked nationally in the top 25!

That is tremendous for a team that came into the season with Coach Brown on the hot seat and with little to no hope of being talked about nationally.

The Mountaineers are coming off a season where they only won five games and failed to make a Bowl Game. At this point anything less that seven wins and a Bowl Game would be a tremendous disappointment.

5. BYU (4 – 1) AP Ranking – Unranked

Coach Kalani Sitake has the Cougars playing their normal tough football and making themselves known. They currently sit outside the AP Top 25, but with a few more wins they could challenge for a spot.

BYU does still have to play Texas and Oklahoma which will be tough obstacles, but the Cougars can realistically challenge for a bowl game and possibly match the eight wins they earned last year.

ACC TOP FIVE

The ACC is a conference that has teams fighting to take the crown of “Champion” from Clemson who has held that spot in the conference for years.

Although other teams could still challenge for the crown, currently Florida State, North Carolina, and Louisville have the inside track to compete in the ACC Championship.

1. FLORIDA STATE (5 – 0) AP Ranking – #4

The Seminoles are on the path to the ACC Championship game if they can stay focused and motivated each week. They will be favored in each of their remaining games and they avoid the number two and number four teams in the ACC Top 5 in North Carolina and Louisville.

QB Jordan Travis and DE Jared Verse will look to continue to lead the Seminoles to victory against Syracuse this coming weekend.

The Tar Heels destroyed Syracuse this past weekend by the score of 40 – 7. Besides the good feeling from the win, they Tar Heels also got WR Tez Walker declared eligible by the NCAA.

Walker got his feet wet this past week, but the talented WR will be counted on even more in the upcoming weeks.

North Carolina still has some tough games ahead, but if they can keep winning they could play in the ACC Championship.

3. DUKE (4 – 1) AP Ranking – #17

The Blue Devils had a Bye week last week, but the week before that they lost a tough game to Notre Dame and even more importantly, lost star QB Riley Leonard to an injury at the end of the game.

The good news is that Leonard’s injury does not appear to be season ending and he had a Bye Week to rest up and recover.

While Duke might hold him out for their game against NC State this week, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him suit up against FSU on October 21st.

Leonard’s health will determine just how successful Duke can be the rest of the season.

4. LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (6 – 0) AP Ranking – #14

The Cardinals were thoroughly impressive in defeating Notre Dame this past weekend. I didn’t expect the cardinals to put together such a strong team in Coach Brohm’s first year, but so far they are undefeated.

They will get a chance to move up in the rankings in two weeks when they face the #3 team in the ACC in Duke.

This week they can’t look ahead as they have to be ready to face Pitt on the road.

5. CLEMSON (4 – 2) AP Ranking – Unranked

Clemson has uncharacteristically lost two games early in the year. Neither loss was to a bad team as they lost to FSU and Duke, but it is still not what Clemson fans have come to expect.

I believe in Coach Dabo Swinney and the talent on the Tigers to still turn their season around and be a top 25 team.

The Bye comes at a good time for the coaches to work on some of the Tiger’s weaknesses and then come out of the bye with a win on October 21st against a good Miami team.

MIAMI (4 – 1) AP Ranking – #25

Miami just had a brutal loss to a struggled Georgia Tech team. This loss needs to be put squarely on the coaching staff, but the players are not innocent for allowing the game to be that close.

Miami has a chance to jump back into the rankings if they can win against North Carolina this week, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

NOTABLE Week 7 GAMES

The season just continues to provide us with games to look forward to. There are lots of good games on the schedule for week 7, but some of the most exciting games for week 7 are listed below:

  • #8 Oregon #7 Washington – The biggest game of the week pits two Pac-12 title contenders against each other. The winner gets a leg up on the race for a spot in the College Football Playoffs!
  • Arkansas @ #11 Alabama – The Tide are trying to prove that they are legit title contenders and the Razorbacks and talented QB KJ Jefferson are trying to save their season!
  • #10 USC @ #21 Notre Dame – USC is looking to keep their undefeated season on track against their old rival, but Notre Dame is angry, talented, and desperate. Who takes this one?
  • Iowa @ Wisconsin – Neither team might be ranked currently, but they are the cream of the Big Ten West and the winner has the inside track on securing a spot in the Big Ten Championship game.
  • Texas A&M @ #19 Tennessee – Tennessee is a talented team that is trying to prove that last year was not a fluke and Texas A&M is a loaded team that has failed to live up to expectations two years in a row. Who wants it more?
  • #25 Miami @ #12 North Carolina – Miami coach Mario Cristobal felt the heat for his huge coaching mistake which cost the Hurricanes the game last week. He will look to make up for it, but he is facing a talented North Carolina team led by star QB Drake Maye.
  • #18 UCLA @ #15 Oregon State – Two talented teams with one conference loss each. In the loaded Pac-12 two losses most likely knock you out of the race for the conference championship.
